Actions The exact mode of action of diethylcarbamazine citrate is not fully understood, however current evidence suggests an immune system/drug interaction, although diethylcarbamazine citrate has shown cholinesterase effects. Diethylcarbamazine citrate is effective against the L4 larvae of Dirofilaria immitis as it moults within three months of infection by mosquitoes. Uptake from the gut is rapid and clearance is mostly as metabolites in the urine. Indications Canine heartworm disease prophylaxis. Warnings Diethylcarbamazine citrate may be harmful to dogs infected with circulating microfilariae; do not use in these dogs until cleared by a veterinarian. Precautions Dogs older than 6 months should be tested before commencing diethylcarbamazine. Dosage and Administration Heartworm prophylaxis. 5.5 mg/kg bodyweight, given daily.
