Section: 18(a)(vi) Immunotherapy - Vaccines and antisera - Cats
IVS revision date: 01 AUG 2000
Registered Name Leucogen Vaccine Against Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV)
Composition Purified recombinant gp-70 subtype A (vaccinal antigen) expressed as p45 102 microgram/dose. Quil A (purified saponin) 10 microgram/dose and aluminium hydroxide 3 mg/dose as adjuvants.
Actions Active immunisation against feline leukaemia virus (FeLV). Leucogen contains only the single effective immunising protein (p45) which leads to the production of high levels of seroneutralising antibodies. The development of Leucogen has been entirely based on gp 70 from the subtype A virus, a precursor to subgroups B and C and the only infectious subgroup. Only this subgroup A gp 70 has been acknowledged to allow the synthesis of protective neutralising antibodies to occur. Insertion of the sequence of the gene coding for the subgroup A gp 70 into a colibacillus has permitted the controlled (thermoregulated) expression of its protein portion, p45, which carries the essential antigen determinants. Its adsorption onto special adjuvants has enabled a very high specific protective response to be obtained, with absolute safety. The vaccine's safety is a result of the absence of any viral fragment particles. The vaccine only contains synthesised p45 protein, completely purified, to the exclusion of all other limited use or even immunosuppressive viral structures (such as p15 E).
Indications Active immunisation of cats against feline leukemia virus infection. When combined with Feligen RCP, additional protection against feline rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus and feline panleucopenia (feline infectious enteritis) is also achieved.
Contraindications Vaccination of cats receiving corticosteroids or pregnant queens.
Dosage and Administration Inject subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Primary vaccination of cats 9 weeks of age and older. Inject two doses at a two to three week interval (interval must not exceed four weeks). Annual boosters are recommended. Leucogen can be given alone or used as a diluent for Feligen RCP (see Feligen RCP label).
 Presentation Vial, 1.1 mL: 10's.
Storage Store at 2 to 8 deg. C. (Refrigerate. Do not freeze.)
