Interceptor Spectrum Flavour Tabs for Dogs

Novartis Animal Health Australasia Pty Limited
Section: 15(a)(ii) Parasiticides - Internal infestations - Small animals
IVS revision date: 01 AUG 2005
Registered Name Interceptor Spectrum Flavour Tabs for Very Small [Small, Medium, Large] Dogs
Composition Tablets for Very Small Dogs (< 4 kg). Milbemycin oxime 2.3 mg, praziquantel 22.8 mg.
Small Dogs (4 to 11 kg). Milbemycin oxime 5.75 mg, praziquantel 57 mg.
Medium Dogs (11 to 22 kg). Milbemycin oxime 11.5 mg, praziquantel 114 mg.
Large Dogs (22 to 45 kg). Milbemycin oxime 23 mg, praziquantel 228 mg.
Actions Milbemycin oxime prevents heartworm and controls gastrointestinal nematodes. It increases nematode membrane permeability to chloride ions via glutamate gated chloride ion channels, leading to flaccid paralysis and death of the parasite. Praziquantel controls tapeworms by modifying the permeability of their membranes to calcium, inducing damage to the membranes and resulting in the death of the parasite.
Indications Monthly treatment prevents heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection, controls adult roundworm (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), immature roundworm (Toxocara canis), adult whipworm (Trichuris vulpis), adult hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum), adult tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia pisiformis and Dipylidium caninum) and aids in the control of adult hookworm (Uncinaria stenocephala) infection in dogs.
Warnings Some mild, transient, shock-like reactions have occurred when treating heartworm positive dogs carrying a high number of microfilariae at the time of the first treatment with milbemycin oxime. Dogs should be tested and be free from both adult heartworm and microfilariae before starting on preventative treatment with Interceptor Spectrum.
Precautions Interceptor Spectrum provides a wide margin of safety in dogs when used according to label directions. Milbemycin oxime has been tested in over 75 different breeds of dogs, including pregnant females, breeding males and females, and puppies from 2 weeks of age. Satisfactory margins of safety have been demonstrated for both milbemycin oxime and praziquantel when administered during all reproductive phases.
First aid. If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.
Disposal. Dispose of empty containers by wrapping with paper and putting in garbage.
Dosage and Administration For prevention of heartworm and control of intestinal worms, treat with Interceptor Spectrum every month, preferably on the same date each month. Tablet can be administered directly or hidden in food. Very small dogs (< 4 kg). Give 1 tablet from brown pack. Small dogs (4 to 11 kg). Give 1 tablet from green pack. Medium dogs (11 to 22 kg). Give 1 tablet from yellow pack. Large dogs (22 to 45 kg). Give 1 tablet from white pack. Very large dogs (> 45 kg). Dose with the appropriate combination of tablets according to bodyweight. Puppies. Treat at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks, then monthly. Growing puppies may gain sufficient weight during the course of treatment to require an increased dose of Interceptor Spectrum. Pregnant bitches. Treat at mating and then every month. Ensure there is a treatment prior to whelping.
Missed dose protection. The regular interval between doses is one month, i.e. approximately 30 days. If a regular monthly treatment is missed by 15 days or less, administer Interceptor Spectrum immediately and resume monthly dosing schedule. If a dose is missed by 15 to 30 days, heartworm prevention can be maintained if the dog is dosed immediately and then maintained on regular monthly dosing for the next two months. If a period of greater than 60 days has elapsed since the last dose, veterinary consultation is recommended.
